Personal philosophy: Since I am a perfectionist - If it is not worth doing
right it is not worth doing.
Achievement of which you are most proud: overcoming adult onset diabetes at
age 33 and now continuing a lifelong pursuit of ultrarunning, controlling the
disease strictly with exercise and diet for more then 18 years after using
insulin for 3 months.
Favorite subject in school: math and science

Pet peeve: people who cut in line and don't wait their turn. People who
think they are better then everyone else and therefore believe they should be
given special consideration.
Favorite nonrunning leisure activity: nature walking, watching nature shows
and sci-fi movies
Greatest fear: failure without trying my best first. Giving up without
exploring all avenues of solutions first.
Happiest memory: marrying a high school classmate and spending the last 27+
years in bliss raising 2 great children and now seeing the third generation
beginning with my granddaughter's emergency birth 2 days before my 50th
birthday.
Secret ambition/fantasy: become financially independent so that we could
travel the USA and sight see. In addition I would like to experience trail
running in all the areas that we would visit. I would also like to promote
exercise and wellness to others who are battling disease which could be
helped by learning from my experience.
Personal strengths: I have a one-tracked mind and a phenomenal urge to never
give up in spite of all the factors against me. I want to be the inspiration
for those who do not have the elite talent to participate to win but have the
undying urge to participate for the enjoyment and the inner peace of knowing
that you tried and learned and did more then you thought you were capable of.
Personal weaknesses: I am a procrastinator and need a push usually to get my
good qualities moving. The encouragement of the Ultra community has been my
greatest help in this pursuit.

Why do you run ultras? To push myself beyond my current limit and what others
perceive as impossible.
Short-term goal: recover from my spring and summer ultras and complete
another Flat Rock 50K
Long-term goal: complete another 100M race and attempt the Leadville 100M. I
also want to continue to run the 24 hour until I break 100 miles. After
that, move to the 48 hour.
Favorite ultra quote(s):
You are better then you think you are.- Ken Chlouber - Leadville 100m
"Some people dream of worthy accomplishments, while others stay awake and
achieve them"
Comments: when making the step up from 1 mile, 2 mile, 10K races to the half
marathon and marathon there is a change in the camaraderie of the
participants and a feeling of family in the marathon. There is a feeling of
respect for those who start and are able to continue through to the finish.
This is only the beginning and the true family begins in the Ultra Marathons.
The genuine respect for any ultra marathoner is shown by all from the very
top elite runner to the last place back of the pack runner. We are all
members of one big happy family. We are there racing against ourselves and
the elements and not each other. Each runner will do anything and everything
for a fellow runner before during and after one of these runs. The sense of
accomplishment when completing one of these runs is immeasurable and all in
the group feed off of each other's victories. Even when things go bad there
is always a sense of learning that will be used in future races to our
advantage. For each of us who finish our ultra challenge it is our own
private Mt. Everest that has just be scaled. Great running to all.
