Sun to Sun 12-Hour Run

A third installment of the “Members’ Only Run” is in the books.  I supposed we now have a trilogy.  This years’ run was a 12-hour run staged on the Sand Creek Trail in Newton and North Newton.  It was a 5-mile “keyhole” route.  The route consisted of sidewalk and woodchip trail – quite a contrast.

 

The event began Saturday at 7:00pm on the 15th – beware the Ides of March right?  Fortunately, we didn’t need to beware.  The weather was near perfect.  Temperatures were in the 30’s for the majority of the event.  There was light wind and some good moon light.  You almost didn’t need your headlamp for the first half of the night.

 

After a very short race briefing we were off right on time.  Most groups of runners disbanded after a lap or two, with the exception of “father – daughter team” of Jim Myers and Kim Spielman.  They ran a solid 50km together.  Ron Jansen and Lynn Moore called it a night early, but Lynn stayed to volunteer and came back the next morning to help clean up.  Phil Sheridan, Matt Becker and Randy Albrecht all clipped off a speedy 50km or 35 miles and also called it a night.  Harvey Bauer made the trip from Milford (KS) to put in 25 miles.

 

Jim Davis plugged away in to the early morning hours, but called it good at 25 miles after the lack of sleep caught up to him.  Rich Golden also kept plugging away in the wee hours and finished out with 50km.  I vowed to keep running as long as someone else was running.  So unbeknown to Rich, his running kept me running.  By the time I finished up my latest lap he had called it good and left, so what do?  It was about 5:15am and 55 miles.  I couldn’t call it quits with such an odd amount of miles, so I ran until I hit 100km.  I couldn’t have done with out our lone volunteer at that point– Dennis Haig.  All of our volunteers did a great job coming out into the cold night hours to stand in a tent and serve runners.  We couldn’t have had an event with out them.

 

What’s in store for next year’s “Members’ Only Run”.  Who knows?  I don’t…at least not yet.
